Why Miami Is Emerging as a Top 5 Entrepreneurial City
A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Gustavo Trindade, first arrived in 2017 with a chance to help tap into Miami’s emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem. The opportunity was exciting for him as the first director of Babson Miami, opening the College’s popular Miami campus to offer a variety of educational programs, including a Blended Learning MBA. Babson has strong connections to Miami, which is one of the College’s largest alumni bases, and it was an inspiring moment to begin to build his roots in the city, often considered the unofficial capital of Latin America.

Billionaire Ken Griffin gives $20 million to Miami Dade College
Ken Griffin's South Florida spending spree has now benefited a college where more than half the students are from low-income households. The billionaire founder of hedge fund Citadel donated $20 million to Miami Dade College, one of the country's largest and most diverse schools. The billionaire, whose $54 billion hedge fund had its most successful year in 2022, has also been making significant charitable gifts to South Florida organizations since moving his firm's headquarters to Miami last year. According to a statement, Miami Dade College will use the money to establish the Griffin Scholarship Fund, which will give all qualifying students graduating from high school in Miami-Dade County a chance at a college education. It's the largest single philanthropic gift in the college's history.

How Augmented Reality Is Disrupting Health Care For The Better
As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Mohamed Abou Shousha knows that not enough people have access to eye care. Although more than 90 million American adults are at high risk for vision loss, about half will not seek care due to lack of awareness or cost of care, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In other cases, people may not have the ability to take time off from work to go to a doctor’s office for an exam. Shousha is using technology to change that. He’s the founder of Miami-based Heru, an artificial intelligence-driven diagnostics and vision augmentation platform. The platform is designed to diagnose visual field disorders, double vision and other vision defects with augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) glasses. Under the direction of a physician, patients can use a wearable device to take diagnostic and wellness exams from clinics or remote locations, with results that doctors can immediately access.

Hip-Hop Exec Teams With Florida Memorial To Cultivate Black Tech Stars
When Slip-N-Slide Records founder Ted Lucas decided to start investing in the tech industry, he quickly realized Black people were being left out of the high-paying jobs and startup funding. The Miami rap pioneer, who is responsible for discovering multiplatinum artists such as Rick Ross, Trina and Trick Daddy, decided he needed to take the same energy he put into finding top music acts and use it to foster the next Black tech superstars. In 2021, Lucas founded TechNolij, a nonprofit organization focused on closing the racial wealth gap through technology education. To ensure that Black students aren’t left out in the tech boom, Lucas has partnered with Florida Memorial University, South Florida’s only historically Black university, to house the TechNolij Innovation Center. The partnership between TechNolij and FMU will allow students at the HBCU to enroll in tech-focused boot camps, attend free panel discussions with tech leaders and receive resources, stipends for certification, and job placement.
