Why The New CEO Of Blink Charging Isn't Worried About Tesla
|
The need for electric vehicle chargers is increasing as more consumers transition away from gas-powered cars to more environmentally friendly options. Miami Beach's Blink Charging is among the businesses vying to dominate the fast-growing EV charger market. With more than 70,000 charging stations in the U.S., U.K., Europe and Latin America, Blink is focused on scaling quickly to establish itself as a global EV charging leader. That has included several acquisitions — such as SemaConnect's former manufacturing facility in Maryland — and partnerships with agencies like the U.S. Postal Service. Manufacturing in the U.S. allows Blink to capitalize on a Biden administration infrastructure law that is investing billions in EV chargers made in America. It's part of a plan to build a national network of EV charging stations, particularly in low income and rural areas. Blink Charging is led by Brendan Jones, who was appointed CEO in May. He succeeded founder and former chief executive officer Michael Farkas, who led the company for 14 years before stepping down. Jones was already an industry veteran when he joined Blink. He was previously the COO and first employee at EV charging network Electrify America LLC and vice president of OEM strategy and business development at EVgo, a public EV charging network.

These 10 States Are Running America's Best Economies - Florida's On The List
|
Economists are increasingly divided on whether a recession is inevitable, or if the U.S. economy is headed for a soft landing. Inflation is trending lower, the stock market is up, the labor market remains strong, and while consumer demand is down, many Americans keep spending. Whatever happens, it will affect different states in different ways. Some state economies are better situated than others to navigate the twists and turns ahead. Companies are keeping close track as they decide where to do business. And CNBC's annual competitiveness study, America's Top States for Business, is keeping track as well. The Economy category is among the heaviest weighted in our methodology this year. To determine which states have the best economy, we look at overall economic growth and annual job growth on a percentage basis, as well as the health of state finances. We also look at the overall health of the housing market. We measure the breadth of each state's economy by looking at how many major corporations are headquartered there. And, new in 2023, we are evaluating the entrepreneurial economy based on new business formations. Some state economies are faltering and at risk of taking a big hit in a recession. But these ten states are well equipped to handle almost anything the national economy throws their way.

Miami-Dade County To Invest In Startups That Find Sustainable Uses For Seaweed
|
The Miami-Dade Innovation Authority is getting serious about seaweed. So serious, in fact, that it is offering $100,000 equity investments to startups that find sustainable uses for sargassum, a type of seaweed that tends to accumulate on Florida beaches from April to October. Created this year by the office of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, the Innovation Authority launched to support equitable and sustainable economic growth in Miami's technology sector. To do that, the county is partnering with private and philanthropic partners to invest in startups focused on solving problems in areas that affect the daily lives of local residents. The initiative is backed by $9 million in seed funding pledged by the county, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Citadel CEO Ken Griffin.
The Innovation Authority will fund at least three early to growth stage tech startups developing solutions to process and reuse sargassum in an environmentally friendly way. That will also help solve a major problem for the county, which spent more than $4.2 million on sargassum cleanup in 2022 alone.

Lucy Guo's Passes To Further Develop Paywall Platform For Creators
|
It’s hard to nail down exactly what the creator economy is. But if we take Goldman Sachs’ definition – individual people who monetize their own brands and online audiences – the total addressable market of the creator economy is already at $250 billion. The investment bank’s analysts expect this figure to balloon to $480 billion by 2027. Might a Miami company be at the forefront of this growth? There’s one rising star that is already on that path. Meet Passes. If you’re active on #MiamiTech Twitter, you’ve heard of this company founded by Lucy Guo, the co-founder of Scale AI and a self-made success story. She moved to Miami during the pandemic and has been a vocal supporter of our local tech scene.
Passes enables creators to maximize the profits they make off their audience. And the company announced that it has raised a $9 million seed round led by Multicoin Capital with participation from Florida Funders, Anti Fund, Gradient Ventures, Craft Ventures, Menlo Ventures, and 11:11 Media. Through Passes, creators can offer fans the opportunity to buy access to exclusive content and experiences.
