South Florida Climate Resilience Tech Hub Identified As A Regional Center Primed For Technological Innovation And Job Creation
The Biden-Harris administration, through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), announced the designation of 31 Tech Hubs in regions across the country. South Florida Climate Resilience Tech Hub won EDA designation as a Tech Hub. The Tech Hub Designation serves as an unmistakable testament that South Florida is not only a leader in sustainable and resilient infrastructure (SRI) innovation but is also primed for rapid technology-led economic development. This achievement has been made possible through collective dedication - a diverse array of public, private, and academic partners, including eMerge Americas, in a collaborative consortium.

Anyplace, A “Digital Nomads” Startup Says New Round “Nearly Doubled” Valuation
Hospitality startup Anyplace began its life as a marketplace that gives people the option to book hotels or rentals for a minimum of 30 days nearly anyplace they want. In early 2022, the company pivoted into an operator model with its product, Anyplace Select, which is designed for remote workers and corporate travelers to be able to work from anywhere with furnished apartments that include a “fully equipped” home office. It stopped operating the marketplace in December 2022 to focus on the new line of business. The transition has proven to be a smart move for the company, according to CEO and co-founder Satoru Steve Naito, who said the company’s revenue is up 6x since January 2022. To further fuel its growth, Anyplace has raised $8.27 million in Series B funding. It last raised in January 2022 — a $5.3 million Series A round led by GA Technologies.

Inside Apple’s Big Plan to Bring Generative AI To All Its Devices
Apple was caught flat-footed when ChatGPT and other AI tools took the technology industry by storm. But the company is now preparing its response and plans to develop features for its full range of devices. One of the most intense and widespread endeavors at Apple Inc. right now is its effort to respond to the AI frenzy sweeping the technology industry. The company has some catching up to do. Apple largely sat on the sidelines when OpenAI’s ChatGPT took off like a rocket last year. It watched as Google and Microsoft Corp. rolled out generative AI versions of their search engines, which spit out convincingly human-like responses to users’ queries. Microsoft also updated its Windows apps with smarter assistants, and Amazon.com Inc. unveiled an AI-enhanced overhaul of Alexa. All the while, the only noteworthy AI release from Apple was an improved auto-correct system in iOS 17.

YouTube Is Developing an AI Tool to Help Creators Sound Like Famous Musicians
YouTube is planning to roll out a new artificial intelligence tool that will allow creators to make videos using the voices of popular recording artists — but inking deals with record companies to launch the beta version is taking longer than expected. The new AI tool, which YouTube had hoped to debut at its Made On YouTube event, will let a select pool of artists to give permission to a select group of creators to use their voices in videos on the platform. From there, the product could be released broadly to all users with the voices of artists who choose to opt in. YouTube is also looking at those artists to contribute input that will help steer the company’s AI strategy beyond this. The major labels, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group, are still negotiating licensing deals that would cover voice rights for the beta version of the tool.

Amazon Tests Humanoid Robot In Warehouse Automation Push
Amazon.com Inc. says it’s testing two new technologies to increase automation in its warehouses, including a trial of a humanoid robot. The humanoid robot, called Digit, is bipedal and can squat, bend and grasp items using clasps that imitate hands. It’s built by Agility Robotics Inc. and will initially be used to help employees consolidate totes that have been emptied of items. Amazon invested in Agility Robotics last year. The retailer, which is the second-largest US employer behind Walmart Inc., has deployed robots in its warehouses for more than a decade, mainly to move inventory to waiting employees. That system, which starts with humans stuffing inventory items into mesh shelving, is undergoing a transformation to container-based storage, which more easily allows robotic arms and other automated technology to sort and pick items.
