New Endeavor Miami Report Unpacks Entrepreneurial Migration Data, Sheds Light On South Florida Impact
Endeavor Miami and Endeavor’s analytics team partnered up to reveal what the data can tell us about the unprecedented entrepreneurial migration our region has experienced in the last couple of years. Attractors go well beyond low taxes and quality of life factors – though that helps. The report is Endeavor’s deep dive into the who, the what and the why entrepreneurs are migrating in huge numbers from other parts of the country and the world, particularly during the pandemic and since then. It also includes comparisons with other tech hubs and recommendations for the region to help sustain and continue to benefit from the trend.

Amid VC's Downturn, Some Corporate Titans Are Doubling Down On Startups
The venture capital industry is experiencing a pullback from the highs of 2021, but that doesn't mean corporate VCs are sitting on the sidelines — especially when it comes to AI. In 2022, 26.2% of all U.S. venture funding rounds included an investment from a corporate venture capital investor. That's the highest such percentage ever recorded, according to venture capital data firm Pitchbook. The number of companies, and their in-house VC firms, that led venture capital deals also hit a high. There were 634 CVC-led rounds last year totaling $22.4 billion in value. That's up from the previous high of 596 deals for $17.6 billion in 2021. More CVC-led deals occurred in 2022 than from all of 2002 to 2009, according to Pitchbook.

TheVentureCity's Laura González-Estéfani On Building Bridges
As has been previously reported, connections between Miami and Madrid abound – with investors, entrepreneurs, and tech community builders increasingly shuttling across the Atlantic to take advantage of the opportunities present in both markets. In many ways, Laura González-Estéfani, the founder and CEO of VC TheVentureCity, has pioneered many of these connections. The Madrid native originally arrived in the US to work at Facebook in Silicon Valley. She acknowledges that landing in Miami was “an accident” – albeit a pleasant one. And in 2017, González-Estéfani founded TheVentureCity with offices in Madrid and Miami.Refresh Miami sat down with González-Estéfani to hear about her thoughts on the two markets and the opportunities present for technologists in both ecosystems. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

How Nicklaus Children's Hospital Uses Virtual Reality To Aid Pediatric Patients
Plenty of adults dread being poked and prodded with needles during doctor appointments. The experience can be even more uncomfortable for children, especially for those suffering from medical conditions that require frequent shots or blood draws to monitor. Enter virtual reality technology. To reduce anxiety in pediatric patients, Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami implemented the use of a virtual reality headset called the Smileyscope. The device, currently used in the hospital's emergency department, makes it possible for pediatric patients to immerse themselves in virtual experiences to distract themselves from uncomfortable needle procedures. Smileyscope stands out from other VR and mixed-reality headsets because it was designed specifically for the health care industry, said Dr. David Seo, senior vice president and chief information and digital officer for Nicklaus Children’s Health System. Children as young as 3 or 4 can wear the headset to follow meditation and breathing exercises before a needle stick.

AI Could Change How Blind People See The World
For her 38th birthday, Chela Robles and her family made a trek to One House, her favorite bakery in Benicia, California, for a brisket sandwich and brownies. On the car ride home, she tapped a small touchscreen on her temple and asked for a description of the world outside. “A cloudy sky,” the response came back through her Google Glass. Robles lost the ability to see in her left eye when she was 28, and in her right eye a year later. Blindness, she says, denies you small details that help people connect with one another, like facial cues and expressions. Robles has tried services that connect her to sighted people for help in the past. But in April, she signed up for a trial with Ask Envision, an AI assistant that uses OpenAI’s GPT-4, a multimodal model that can take in images and text and output conversational responses. The system is one of several assistance products for visually impaired people to begin integrating language models, promising to give users far more visual details about the world around them—and much more independence.

What We Love And Hate About Threads, Meta's New Twitter Clone
Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled Threads, a clone of Twitter designed to lure people turned off by the social network’s changes under owner Elon Musk. And in its first 24 hours, more than 30 million people signed up for the free app. The billionaire social media smackdown is about to get real. What does Threads mean for you — and should you join in the rain on Musk’s parade? On the one hand, Threads has a decent chance of becoming a — maybe even the — major new hub for text-based online conversations. Unlike other would-be Twitter rivals Bluesky and Mastodon, Threads arrives with a potential audience of billions who already use Meta’s photo and video-oriented Instagram, which Threads is built on top of. But Threads also comes with a whole host of Meta baggage, including questionable privacy practices, opaque algorithms and Big Tech monopoly power. What’s to like — and dislike — in Threads? And how do you give it a try?
