Black Innovation Alliance To Bring Its Signature Event To Miami
The Black Innovation Alliance (BIA) is hosting its annual keynote event in Miami, a three-day summit that aims to bolster local Black-led organizations with a special focus on innovation. The Black Innovation Alliance’s Sustainability Summit is led by Dr. Kelly Burton, CEO of the BIA. The event, from June 21-23 at the Kimpton Epic Hotel in downtown Miami, is sponsored by UBS, which has committed to supporting the summit for three years, according to Burton. The event moves to Miami after being held in Fort Lauderdale last year. “We realized that Miami is increasingly becoming a tech hub,” Burton said. “It's emerging in a lot of ways, especially when it comes to technology in the innovation economy. And so, we wanted to be in a space that was vibrant and kind of forward facing in that way.” According to Burton, the event aims to bring together organizations and companies that support Black entrepreneurs, business owners, tech founders and creative technologists. The alliance is comprised of 116 organizations across the United States, including Florida. Combined, they support about 400,000 entrepreneurs and innovators of color, Burton said.

Startup Showcase Alum EpiPaws Paves The Way For More Pet-Health Innovation
South Florida entrepreneur Andria Beal understands the importance of knowing an animal’s age and their genetic markers for their health and overall wellbeing. As a pet owner herself and a PhD graduate from Florida International University, she studied epigenetics – the study of how behaviors and the environment can cause changes that affect the way genes work without changing the DNA sequence – in sharks and dolphins. Founded by Beal in 2022, EpiPaws is a pet age test kit that can help determine a pet’s estimated birthday with a quick oral cheek swab and epigenetic research. Once the pet’s age is determined, the Fort Lauderdale-based startup can offer nutritional tips, behavior insights, and other important health information based on the pet’s life stage. “Genetic health is very important; it’s the underlying base code that determines everything about an organism,” Beal said. “When you develop a disease, there’s a pattern in your gene expression and how things in your body are working. Through EpiPaws, we hope to capture any pattern changes earlier, and let pet owners know beforehand.”

The Hottest New Perk In Tech Is Freedom
It used to be that Big Tech companies like Google, Meta, and Apple led the way when it came to workplace advantages. On top of great pay, they offered freebies like gourmet meals, massages, and on-site laundry. Then, when the pandemic made the office a physical danger, those same companies were among the first to offer the ultimate perk: the ability to work where you wish. But, as their stock prices have suffered, Big Tech has not only dialed back on many on-site perks, they’ve also called workers back to the office. Smaller tech companies have since picked up the mantle of remote work. They are much more likely than their larger peers to allow people to work fully remotely, with 81 percent of those with fewer than 5,000 employees either allowing remote work or only having remote options, according to new data from Scoop Technologies. Tech companies with fewer employees are using remote work as a way to pull in more talent in what had been a notoriously difficult hiring environment and to signify that they, unlike Big Tech, are where progress is happening. People in the tech industry, especially, are more likely to be lured by remote work, according to Gartner, which has found that better work-life balance and greater flexibility were the top benefits tech employees would choose over 10 percent higher compensation.

Supercharging Nature To Suck Carbon From The Air
Reducing emissions won’t be enough to reach international goals for limiting global warming, many climate experts say—it will also require removing billions of tons of carbon dioxide from the air every year. To get there, scientists and startups are working on ways to tweak natural processes that already suck up carbon to enhance their utility as a carbon sink. Some dream that these techniques will form part of a giant new industry that pulls enough carbon dioxide from the air to dial down the planet’s temperature. But the proposals come with environmental risks, and measuring the benefits is a challenge. From fast-growing trees to volcanic dust to ocean tweaks, startups are getting creative in their efforts to fight global warming.
