Miami Startup Sells Watersports Apparel With a Side of Advocacy
Founded by Patrick Rynne, a former U.S. Olympic team sailor, the Miami-based brand, Waterlust, aims to raise awareness about threatened marine and freshwater environments through activewear with designs inspired by the sea. The apparel features loud, funky patterns inspired by ocean creatures and ecosystems. About 5% of sales are donated to research and protection efforts, such as expanding conservation areas or coral reef restoration programs. Rynne accepts that operating an apparel company comes with an environmental cost. "It took two years for the company to find a manufacturer willing to make baseball hats with 100% post-consumer recycled plastic for the snap and the bill," Rynne says.

StartUP FIU’s Crash Kitchen Team Named National Startup Competition Finalist
Inspired by family members who struggled to run traditional restaurants during the pandemic, four friends who hail from the same region in Vietnam and met as FIU students have created their version of a cloud kitchen network that produces food specifically for delivery, but with a distinctly Vietnamese flavor. The four students organized themselves into a company, and with the help of StartUP FIU, they were able to perfect their pitch and make a strong case to potential investors. After winning the campus-wide Hult Prize, the Crash Kitchen team is now in the Hult Prize’s Global Accelerator, a six-week-long program that helps develop the entrepreneurs for the final competition in New York this fall.
