Venture Studio Atomic Raises $32M For Its Fourth Fund
The Miami-based firm just raised its fourth, and largest, fund - a $320 million vehicle that will be used to fund new startups the firm creates and invest in existing portfolio companies. "I think there hasn't been a better time in modern history" to build startups, Jack Abraham, the founder, CEO and managing partner of Atomic, declared. Abraham says that "during economic boom times, talent becomes scarce." But "that has definitely shifted - there's so much talent availability to the point that we actually can't process it all." The way Atomic operates isn't like a normal VC firm: They have a running list of hundreds of ideas for new companies - Abraham tells me the list now numbers over 800 ideas - that the team spins up, finds cofounders for, and funds with their cash (Atomic general partners are cofounders of all the companies, and all 75 Atomic team members get equity in each startup).

Amazon Selects Area Companies For Latino Founders Accelerator
Three local startups were selected to join Amazon Web Services' latest Impact Accelerator Latino Founders Cohort. The Miami-area ventures beat out more than 1,000 applicants to participate in the eight-week cohort. They are among 20 companies that will receive training, resources and $225,000 in unrestricted cash grants and AWS credits to scale their businesses. The technical mentorship program was created to support underrepresented tech entrepreneurs. The local startups selected are EducUp, Lazo, and Monadd. Startups founded by people from Latino backgrounds receive only 2% of all venture capital funding despite making up almost 20% of the U.S. population. Programs like AWS' Impact Accelerator and Endeavor Miami's EndeavorLab aim to highlight the viability of Latino-led companies and direct more funding to those businesses.

Who Is Linda Yaccarino, Elon Musk's Pick For Twitter CEO?
After months leading Twitter, the company’s owner, Elon Musk, has tapped NBCUniversal ad sales chief Linda Yaccarino to take the reins as CEO. The choice of Yaccarino, a longtime media industry insider, could signal a change at the ailing microblogging platform and prove a relief to advertisers, many of whom left Twitter after Musk took control. Twitter has laid off roughly three-quarters of its staff, and users have complained about outages and a shift in atmosphere amid sweeping Musk-led changes. Whether Yaccarino will restore Twitter’s pre-Musk culture, double down on the tech executive’s approach or transform it into something else entirely will be a key question of her tenure — and users have wasted no time scraping her history to make predictions. Here’s what we know.

EU Lawmakers Back Transparency And Safety Rules For Generative AI
In a series of votes in the European Parliament MEPs have backed a raft of amendments to the bloc’s draft AI legislation — including agreeing to a set of requirements for so called foundational models which underpin generative AI technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The text of the amendment agreed by MEPs in two committees put obligations on providers of foundational models to apply safety checks, data governance measures and risk mitigations prior to putting their models on the market — including obligating them to consider “foreseeable risks to health, safety, fundamental rights, the environment and democracy and the rule of law”.
