Meet The South Florida Business Journal's 2023 Power Leaders 250
This year’s Power Leaders 250 reveals how executives from South Florida’s top public and private companies continue to drive growth in their organizations and the region. In a word, their efforts are timeless. Some have careers stretching back decades; some are relative newcomers to the area. Collectively, they’ve weathered recessions and a pandemic, along with the boom times that have made the Sunshine State in general – and South Florida in particular – the darling for investment, relocation, business development and a thriving economy – even in sagging economic times. eMerge Americas is thrilled to have eMerge CEO Felice Gorordo, eMerge Founder and President Melissa Medina, and eMerge Founder and Medina Capital Managing Partner Manny Medina included as this year's honorees.

As Tech Investors Tighten Their Belts, Here Are 4 Steps Startups Can Take To Raise Funds
With some large tech companies making cuts and restructuring given macroeconomic headwinds, scrappier and more agile startups with winning ideas have the opportunity to come to the forefront. However, securing funding is always challenging, and with venture investment activity slowing down, many startups are taking on debt to fill funding gaps. Tech startups need to remember that every major industry experiences fluctuation, but technology is still central to our modern life and innovation will continue to be in demand. Although investors may be more cautious in who and what they invest in (and at what valuations), they are still investing—and looking for the next great idea that could change the world.

All Raise Launches To Propel Women In Entrepreneurship, Venture Capital
On a mission to help build an equitable tech ecosystem, All Raise has launched in Miami.
All Raise is a national nonprofit aimed at accelerating the success of female and non-binary founders, investors, and operators. The organization partners with GET Cities, another nonprofit focused on raising up women in tech that launched last year in Miami and announced its GET Champions program this month. All Raise’s Miami chapter will also arm female and non-binary leaders with access, guidance and support to advance their professional growth. The Miami chapter joins existing chapters in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C. All Raise has two primary goals. One is to double the percentage of female checkwriters to 18% by 2028, and the second is to increase the amount of early-stage funding going to female founders from 11% when All Raised launched to 23% by 2030. On both goals the organization says it is already more than halfway there, acknowledging that “it takes a village” and there are many other organizations also doing work in this area. All Raise has raised $15 million to pursue its mission.

Venture Funding Thrived Like Never Before In These 3 States Including Florida
Last year could not top the banner year venture capital saw in 2021 — at least in most geographies. While the holy trinity of venture funding — California, New York and Massachusetts — saw massive declines some states actually realized significant gains last year, according to Crunchbase data. While the big three saw big declines in venture investment between 2021 and 2022 — although still more than they saw in 2020 — states such as Florida and North Carolina saw substantial gains. Texas venture funding numbers remained even with 2021 levels to the state after seeing a significant increase in 2021 — still impressive since most areas saw a decline last year. Steve Case, founder of Washington, D.C.-based venture firm Revolution, said while there has been steady progress in making the geographical dispersal of venture capital more diverse, the COVID pandemic and the movement of talent has likely accelerated that trend. Along with that, new government initiatives around sectors such as semiconductors and infrastructure and certain areas having an advantage in specific sectors tech has moved into — such as health care and foodtech — also have helped level the playing field.

Mexican "Unicorn" Startup Hiring At New Miami Office
A Latin American shipping and logistics startup with a $1.1 billon valuation chose Miami for its first U.S. location. Nowports, a digital freight forwarder that automates the supply chain process of companies, opened an office in the Wynwood Design District this month. The office is home to 12 employees, with plans to double that number by May. The Mexico-based venture is searching for commercial and operations talent. As a digital freight forwarder, the company uses digital tools to improve efficiency in the shipping process, ensuring cargo traveling by land, air or sea arrives at its final destination in a timely manner. Nowports' digital platform lets users track cargo movements in real time and offers instant quotes for frequently traveled routes.

OpenAI Releases Tool To Detect AI-Generated Text, Including From ChatGPT
After telegraphing the move in media appearances, OpenAI has launched a tool that attempts to distinguish between human-written and AI-generated text — like the text produced by the company’s own ChatGPT and GPT-3 models. The classifier isn’t particularly accurate — its success rate is around 26%, OpenAI notes — but OpenAI argues that it, when used in tandem with other methods, could be useful in helping prevent AI text generators from being abused. As the fervor around generative AI — particularly text-generating AI — grows, critics have called on the creators of these tools to take steps to mitigate their potentially harmful effects. OpenAI’s classifier — aptly called OpenAI AI Text Classifier — is intriguing architecturally. It, like ChatGPT, is an AI language model trained on many, many examples of publicly available text from the web. But unlike ChatGPT, it’s fine-tuned to predict how likely it is that a piece of text was generated by AI — not just from ChatGPT, but any text-generating AI model.
