University Of Miami Secures $1.8M Grant From National Climate Group To Study South Florida's Coastal Ecosystems
The University of Miami was awarded $1.8 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to determine how climate stressors will impact South Florida's coastal and marine ecosystems. The project, co-led by the university's Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science and NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, will study areas such as the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the southwest Florida shelf. Research will assess the effect of stressors like ocean warming, acidification, harmful algal blooms, hypoxia and pollutants. The research team will conduct experiments on 16 key reef species, including corals, seagrass, sargassum and sponges. Resource managers will use the information to understand how stressors sparked by climate change will affect those ecosystems and communities that rely on them. Those communities include many South Floridians. Coastal ecosystems are a draw for the tourism industry, which generates billions of dollars a year and supports thousands of jobs.

5 Investors Have High Hopes For Defense Tech Amid Growing Venture Interest
For many years, it was taken as a given that venture investing was fundamentally incompatible with defense technology. Cripplingly long acquisition cycles — upward of 10 to 15 years for major weapons programs — and unfavorable economics of defense tech startup exits were frequently cited as two reasons why the math simply didn’t add up. The times have changed. Indeed, it is likely not an overstatement to say that the relationship between U.S. defense and Silicon Valley is undergoing its most profound transformation since the 1950s, when Pentagon funding led to massive advances in computing, semiconductors and weapons systems. Here, five venture investors describe this historic shift.

How AI Could Power The Climate Breakthrough The World Needs
Tomato growers in central India have been increasingly worried about the volatility that extreme weather events have brought to the region. The last decade has been punctuated by severe droughts that led to significant crop loss, impacting the livelihoods of local farmers. On the other side of the world, Silicon Valley startup ClimateAi is developing an artificial intelligence platform to evaluate how vulnerable crops are to warming temperatures over the next two decades. The tool uses data on the climate, water and soil of a particular location to measure how viable the landscape will be for growing in the coming years. Maharashtra, India, was one of its first case studies in 2021. Farmers could go into the ClimateAi app and input what seed they were growing and where they wanted to plant it.
