Celebrating A Decade Shaping The Future Of Tech
Meet Miami’s Women In Tech
As a little girl growing up in Miami, Melissa Medina Jiménez wanted to be a gymnast or an Olympic athlete. “I would not say I was heavy into tech,” she admits. But her father, Cuban-American businessman Manny Medina, is considered one of the city’s most successful entrepreneurs—and she inherited his business acumen and enterpreneurial spirit. Together, Medina Jiménez and her father were determined to bring the tech community to Miami, even if it meant nurturing it themselves; they launched eMerge Americas, a venture-backed platform dedicated to transforming South Florida into a global tech hub.

eMerge Startup Showcase Alum Togal.AI Sees 940% Growth In 2023
Have you been keeping up with proptech startup Togal.AI? If not, don’t worry – a lot has happened since the company set up shop less than two years ago. The main headline: growth. In 2023, Togal.AI has seen 940 percent growth—going from 250 users to more than 2,600 users. Founded by former congressman Patrick Murphy, Togal.AI has developed an AI-powered platform that streamlines the planning process for construction projects. The ultimate goal: saving contractors time and money. By that metric, the 20-person company has already had a fair bit of success. For instance, they helped general contractor Coastal Construction cut their estimating workload by 40 percent, a savings of about $1 million and 10,000 hours of work – all in just one year. Refresh Miami sat down with Murphy to discuss this growth and get a sense for what the future has to hold for Togal.AI.

Return Of IPOs, Fewer Unicorns And More Startup Predictions For 2024
What's in store for startups in 2024? An increase in public offerings, a renewed appetite from large corporations in startup investing and fewer active "unicorn" startups with billion-dollar valuations. Those are some of the predictions for the startup and venture capital sector in a new report from Pitchbook, a venture-capital data firm. The past two years have seen a major pullback in startup investing, exits and deals since the highs of 2021, and Pitchbook's analysts say a "significant rebound" isn't likely in the near term, given stubbornly high interest rates, ongoing geopolitical tensions and the potential for a U.S. recession not out of the question. But there are some reasons for optimism for startups in 2024, at least compared to the slowdown experienced over the past year. Will IPOs return? The initial public offering window remained firmly closed for much of 2023.

Generative AI: Transforming Education Into A Personalized Experience
It’s no surprise that educators have an uneasy relationship with generative AI. There’s a palpable concern that generative AI will become a substitute for authentic learning: something that will help a person pass a test without the need to absorb and internalize the material. While there is no doubt that AI has been used to circumvent the learning process, ChatGPT has already assumed the role of an ad hoc personal tutor for millions, changing learning consumption patterns and enhancing our relationship with education. The possibility of an AI-powered teaching assistant — one that mentors, encourages, and guides learners through the material in a one-to-one relationship — is within grasp. And the scalability of AI means that anyone can benefit from it.

This AI Company Wants To Solve Food-Related Climate Challenges
McCain Foods, known in the frozen aisle for its onion rings and sweet potato fries, wants to continue to be known for these products in the next 10 years. But with changing weather patterns, increased heat waves, and other conditions driven by climate change, sweet potato fields and onion crops have become less predictable. That’s when ClimateAi stepped in. The AI-driven SaaS product uses climate risk modeling to provide short- and long-term insights into weather and climate impact for food and beverage companies, helping businesses identify the actions needed today to adapt to climate change disruptions. For McCain, ClimateAi assessed risks for its crops in various geographic regions of focus and provided McCain with detailed recommendations on how it should adapt its practices to maintain yields and value at a microclimate level. That included potential financial impact as well.
