Steve Case Knows That Plenty Of Great Ideas Start Outside Silicon Valley. This Legendary Entrepreneur Wants To Close The Opportunity Gap. 

We all know that entrepreneurs flock to Silicon Valley, New York, and Massachusetts to take advantage of the potential for serious funding. While the streets of Manhattan aren’t necessarily paved in gold, startups don’t typically flourish outside of these specific, coastal areas. As a result, many potential entrepreneurs leave their hometowns because of a lack of opportunity. For years, Steve Case’s investment firm, Revolution, has been trying to correct that imbalance. The company travels the United States, seeking entrepreneurs outside of the established tech hubs. They host pitch competitions, mentor founders to fine tune pitches, and provide funding for the most exciting ideas. In his new book, The Rise Of Rest, Steve introduce readers to dozens of entrepreneurs whose inspirational stories offer iconic examples of American invention, including our very own eMerge Americas journey.

Walmart Arrives on Roblox For The First Time With Two New Virtual Worlds

Walmart announced that it is stepping into the metaverse with two new experiences on Roblox: “Walmart Land” and “Universe of Play.” The virtual worlds are aimed at younger Walmart customers and let Roblox players collect new virtual merchandise, play games featuring toys and characters, earn toys from a blimp, attend live concerts, win fashion competitions and more. This marks the retail store’s first time trying virtual worlds as it continues experimenting with new ways to reach the next generation of shoppers, Generation Alpha and Gen Z. Walmart has tried other virtual tech before, such as its new AI-powered virtual try-on technology.

How Emergency Ventures Worked Overtime To Be Ready For Hurricane Ian

Emergency Ventures was just weeks from releasing its debut emergency services app, when weather forecasts began to predict South Florida could get hit by the storm that became Hurricane Ian. During a routine meeting with Miami-Dade Emergency Management, founder and CEO Joseph Russo was asked whether the app would be ready in time for the storm. "I said no, but give me 24 hours," he said. "And in those next 24 hours I didn't sleep a wink." Established this year, Emergency Ventures is building a web and mobile app that connects citizens, volunteers and emergency managers during natural disasters like hurricanes. The app is personalized to offer information such as weather forecasts, evacuation zone details and emergency shelter locations that are relevant to the user.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Will Test Robotic Tortilla Chip Maker ‘Chippy’ 

Chipotle Mexican Grill is moving one step closer to having a robot make its tortilla chips.

The burrito chain will test “Chippy,” an autonomous kitchen assistant made by Miso Robotics, in a restaurant in Fountain Valley, California. Chipotle has already tested Chippy’s ability to make and season its tortilla chips with salt and lime at its headquarters’ innovation hub in Irvine, California. Like the rest of its new tech and menu items, the company is relying on its “stage-gate process” to test and learn from workers and customers to decide how to roll out the technology nationwide. Today, workers at Chipotle restaurants fry and season the chips, which can be time consuming.

BNV Takes Paris Fashion Week Into The Metaverse With K-Pop Group Lightsum

Following designer Victor Weinsanto’s latest fashion collection showcase in the Marais district of Paris, there was the typical post-show scrum you’d find at any Paris Fashion Week event: models with their hair in elaborate styles that give Bjork a run for her money, photographers snapping street style shots, and a lot of cigarettes being smoked and gossip exchanged. Two floors down, however, in a subterranean room with all the lights shut off, was something very different: a series of glass cases displaying 3D holograms of apparel that exists only in digital form. These designs were the result of a collaboration between the designer's titular Weinsanto brand, Korean pop group Lightsum, and virtual fashion company BNV.
