Hotels Using NFTs To Create A Stubhub For Lodging Reservations

Some resort owners think they have found a way to avoid getting stuck with excess inventory when guests cancel at the last minute. It involves converting room nights for sale into nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, that can be bought or sold by hotel guests, similar to the StubHub market for concert and sporting event tickets. Owners say this ensures they get paid for the rooms because guests would sell their reservation in the market if they decide not to go, and appeal to the crypto-enthusiastic traveler.

eBay Launches First Collection Of NFTs With Web3 Platform OneOf

eBay is the latest company to enter the NFT business, as the online marketplace announced today that it’s launching its first collection of NFTs in partnership with web3 platform OneOf. The company’s new “Genesis” NFT Collection will feature 3D and animated interpretations of the iconic athletes featured on Sports Illustrated covers over the years. eBay says the surge in the collectibles market has led to its first-ever collaboration in the NFT space. The first NFT collection, which is now available, features Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky.

Broadcom Acquiring VMWare For $61 Billion

Broadcom is acquiring VMware in a $61 billion cash-and-stock deal. It’s one of the biggest tech acquisitions ever, behind Dell’s $67 billion EMC deal and Microsoft’s pending acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. Broadcom is known for its chip business, designing and manufacturing semiconductors for modems, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth chips across multiple devices. This giant acquisition for VMware is designed to boost Broadcom’s software business. VMware, which was owned by Dell until it was spun off last year, focuses on cloud computing and virtualization technology. The combination of VMware and Broadcom could be a powerful one, focused on enterprise infrastructure and cloud computing.

Niantic Acquires Miami's SpotX Games In An Effort To Enter Web3

SpotX Games, a Web3 project that came out of this year’s Miami Hack Week, announced today that its founders are joining Niantic, the company behind Pokémon GO, and bringing SpotX games with them. SpotX Games lets people experience an augmented reality scavenger hunt across the city and earn a first-of-its-kind user generated NFT showcasing the user’s unique experience. While Niantic is based in San Francisco, Keslin said the SpotX team will continue in Miami. “One of the main reasons they’re staying in Miami is because Miami has become such a hotbed for Web3,” Phil Keslin, CTO of Niantic, said in an interview with Refresh.

Four South Florida Ventures Make Crunchbase's 'Emerging Unicorn' List

More local companies are on their way to "unicorn" status. Four businesses headquartered in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties are among 307 firms to make Crunchbase's Emerging Unicorn Board, a roundup of private companies with a valuation approaching $1 billion. Seven companies, including insurtech Healthcare.com and cryptocurrency infrastructure MoonPay, were among the local firms that reached unicorn status in 2021. South Florida companies to make the emerging unicorn list include ModMed, Novo, OpenStore, and Shipmonk. The number of global unicorns surpassed 1,000 for the first time in 2021, with nearly 600 new companies reaching $1 billion-plus valuations, according to Crunchbase, a platform that collects data on private and public companies.

As Crypto Becomes More Mainstream, Can It Stay Decentralized?

As global markets continue to face downward trends, crypto markets are anticipating greater adoption as people see the digital asset sector as a hedge against inflation (even though some prices are currently down from their 52-week marks). Whether it’s first-time buyers of cryptocurrency or people learning more about NFTs, Bitcoin and the general crypto ecosystem, there has been an uptick globally in crypto awareness and, in turn, adoption, data indicates. As crypto becomes more mainstream, regulators worldwide have monitored the space more closely to (they say) protect consumers. Just last week, The Group of Seven, an international political forum of members from the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, called for swift, consistent and comprehensive regulation of crypto-asset issuers and service providers.
