University Of Miami Joins Elite Group Of North America’s Top Research Institutions
The University of Miami joined an invitation-only group of North America’s elite research universities, accomplishing a decade-old goal and receiving one of the most prestigious honors in higher education. The Association of American Universities invited UM this year to become a member following a unanimous vote by the association’s member institutions, a select group that includes Ivy League schools like Harvard and Yale, and top state universities, such as the University of Florida. Five other universities, including the University of South Florida, also joined the AAU as new members. The recognition boosts UM’s reputation worldwide, and could attract more staff, faculty and students to the university. “This should be a point of pride not only for the university, but for our entire city and region. It is a sign of Miami’s growing preeminence,” said University of Miami President Julio Frenk in an interview. AAU membership will also allow UM to network with other top leaders in meetings and working groups.

Watch Out, Silicon Valley: Miami Is Vying To Become America's AI Hub
Long before OpenAI's ChatGPT release made advanced artificial intelligence a worldwide conversation, Miami had been quietly positioning itself to become a go-to destination for AI startups and other tech firms. Now, Florida's largest metro is seeing that investment pay off as more companies flock to the business-friendly area to escape crime-riddled California tech hubs like San Francisco and before long, advocates believe, Miami could give Silicon Valley a run for its money.
Valentin Saitarli co-founded his artificial intelligence company, PRAI, with a fellow student while attending Stanford University in 2018. The team was one of the first to have access to OpenAI's technology back then, and recognized the impact generative AI would soon have across the globe. But in 2021, Saitarli and his partner moved PRAI to Miami and haven't looked back. They chose Miami for multiple reasons: its weather, significantly lower taxes, safety, the way it cultivates business development, and its particular embrace of tech.

Living Seawall Maker Wins Grand Prize At Florida Aerospace And Emerging Tech Forum
Two South Florida startups took home awards at the 2023 Florida Aerospace and Emerging Tech Forum. Miami Beach-based Kind Designs won the $40,000 grand prize award at the event, held in Melbourne. It was organized by Space Florida, the state's aerospace economic development agency, and the Florida Venture Forum, an organization that supports investors and entrepreneurs. Orlando venture capital firm DeepWork Capital announced it will invest $100,000 in Kind Designs. Founded by entrepreneur Anya Freeman, the early stage startup uses 3-D printing to make sustainable seawalls that can help ward off sea level rise in coastal communities. The 3D-printed seawalls are designed to mimic coral reefs, making it possible for the structures to protect shorelines from flooding while creating an ecosystem for marine life. The seawalls are also embedded with sensor systems to collect water quality data. Zulu Pods, a Fort Lauderdale startup led by Rob Sladen, was the first runner-up and was awarded $30,000.

Local Startup Is Only Florida Company To Make New Forbes List
The past year hasn't been easy for financial technology startups. But one South Florida company is defying the odds — and attracting attention from Forbes. Miami-based Novo is among the top fintech startups in the country, according to Forbes' new Fintech 50 list. It was the only Florida-based company to make the list and one of a handful headquartered outside of California or New York. Novo is behind a mobile banking platform that supports a range of digital features for small businesses, entrepreneurs and freelancers. After launching in New York City in 2016, the company moved its headquarters to the Magic City, the hometown of co-founder and CEO Michael Rangel. While other fintechs pull back, Novo is expanding. The startup recently leased the entire 22nd floor of 801 Brickell Ave. in the Brickell Financial District. The 18,450-square-foot-space, still under construction, will be a global headquarters for Novo’s team of more than 300 employees. About 100 of those workers – including 40 in Florida – are based in the U.S.
