West Palm Beach-based Emergency App Is Equipping Us With The Digital Tools Necessary To Weather Disasters
When Hurricane Irma hit in 2017, Joe Russo was inspired to do something to help our South Florida community. The Palm Beach Gardens native, who previously founded South Florida Tech Hub, ventured down to the Florida Keys to aid in the recovery response. At eMerge Americas in 2018, Russo met a former FEMA administrator. In sharing this experience with him, Russo said that many of his concerns about the lack of technology were validated.

Executive Profile: Nikki Cabus On Championing South Florida Tech
Growing up in West Palm Beach, she spent her weekends volunteering at a city recreational center, playing youth sports and participating in hurricane relief activities. Those ties were so strong that when it came time for college, Cabus knew she didn’t want to stray far from home. “There was a brief time where I moved to Miami,” she said. “But it was short-lived. I didn’t want to be away from Palm Beach County.” As the CEO of South Florida Tech Hub, Cabus is one of the loudest voices championing the tech successes emerging from her home county, as well as the rest of South Florida. The nonprofit membership association unites the local software, engineering, digital and information technology sectors. The goal is to produce long-term economic impact by supporting startups, building the local talent pool and attracting new business to the area.

Can 3-D Printing Help Solve the Housing Crisis?
In 2017, Jason Ballard co-founded Icon, a construction startup focussed on what he believes to be a solution to the housing crisis: 3-D-printed construction, a largely automated method that creates buildings layer by layer, typically with cement-based material. The company has offices in the Yard, a mixed-use development in a formerly industrial area of Austin, Texas. So far, 3-D-printed construction has generated more headlines than buildings. In the past few years, companies have announced the first 3-D-printed house in Florida, “the first two story house printed on site in Europe,” and the first market-rate 3-D-printed house sold in the United States. Until last year, Icon, one of the biggest and best-funded companies in the field, had printed fewer than two dozen houses, most of them essentially test cases.

GET Cities Is Calling On Leaders To Help Increase Gender Equity In Tech
Just 23 percent of tech professionals in the Miami area are women, and it is going to take the help of forward-thinking business leaders to move the needle toward gender equity in the tech workforce. That’s the idea behind GET Cities, Miami’s newest initiative. GET Cities, a national organization that helps tech ecosystems educate, select and promote female talent, will partner with Radical Partners, a Miami-based social impact accelerator, to launch GET Champions. The cohort will equip 20 tech leaders with knowledge, coaching and strategies focused on increasing the number of women, trans, and nonbinary professionals hired and promoted in technical roles. In this new program, GET Champions participants will be tech industry leaders with the desire and the authority to hire, retain, promote and sponsor women, trans and nonbinary professionals at their companies.

AI Tools Can Create New Images, But Who Is The Real Artist?
Countless artists have taken inspiration from “The Starry Night” since Vincent Van Gogh painted the swirling scene in 1889. Now artificial intelligence systems are doing the same, training themselves on a vast collection of digitized artworks to produce new images you can conjure in seconds from a smartphone app. The images generated by tools such as DALL-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion can be weird and otherworldly but also increasingly realistic and customizable — ask for a “peacock owl in the style of Van Gogh" and they can churn out something that might look similar to what you imagined. But while Van Gogh and other long-dead master painters aren't complaining, some living artists and photographers are starting to fight back against the AI software companies creating images derived from their works.
