eMerge Americas Startup Showcase Alumni Caribu Joins The Mattel Portfolio Of Brands
Following the growth of a successful content partnership together, Mattel is welcoming Caribu and its founders into the family. The acclaimed video-calling platform “where kids and families can read, play, and draw together no matter how far apart they are” is packed with educational content geared toward kids ages 0-12. Caribu is interactive and incorporates games, books, and other creative activities from a variety of intellectual property (IP) holders into the virtual playdate experience. According to Mattel, Caribu’s appeal fits well within the Mattel Future Lab, an initiative launched earlier this year in an effort to pioneer the future of play.

How Miami Compares To The Best Metros For Women-Funded Startups
The Miami-area is where you want to be if you're a female founder raising capital in Florida. South Florida technology startups with at least one woman founder captured $596 million across 66 deals during the first three quarters of 2022, according to Pitchbook's fourth annual "All In: Female Founders in the U.S. VC Ecosystem" report. That's more than half of the $922 million invested in female-founded startups across the state during the same period. Although venture capital funding surged in recent years, funding for female-led ventures has not increased at the same pace.

Miami To Debut NFTs Ahead Of Holiday Season
In the coming weeks, Miami is planning to debut a series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) ahead of the holiday season. The offering follows a marked period of turmoil in the crypto market, of which NFTs are a part, the evaporation in value of the city’s trademark cryptocurrency. It will also come shortly after revelations of serious peril for the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which last year secured a nine-figure, 19-year deal with the city and Miami-Dade County to rename the Miami Heat arena. The 5,000 forthcoming Miami NFTs will be “designed by 56 local artists, representing the city’s 56 square miles” and kept on the blockchain Ethereum, a Miami press note said. TIME Magazine committed in July to investing more than $514,000 to the program with an expectation that it will recoup the money through NFT sales. Miami will split NFT sale revenue beyond that sum between the city (50%), local artists (25%), TIME Magazine (15%) and local charities (10%).

Spanish Investment Platform Reental Chooses Miami For Its Expansion
These days, it’s hard to keep up with inflation – much less make a profit on your investments. Across Latin America, where as many as 70% of residents are un- or under-banked and inflation rates are in the double digits, preventing your cash from eroding is even more difficult. Spanish startup Reental offers one potential solution. Their blockchain-based platform enables users to generate a reported 10% return by investing in real estate. In September, Reental named Key Biscayne-based Fernando Ors its president of the Americas region. The Spanish real estate executive, who has been based in Miami for more than a decade, explained that “Miami especially makes sense for companies looking to expand to Latin America,” noting that Latin America is often the first market outside Europe that Spanish companies enter. The Miami advantage, in Ors’ estimation, is that you can get the best of Latin America and the best of the US – no compromise needed.

Revolution Ventures On How Startups Can Get A $1M Investment
Good venture capital deals are still getting done. But entrepreneurs have to hustle – and filter through more scrutiny as they sell their ideas. That’s one take from Tige Savage, who cofounded Revolution Ventures in Washington, D.C., alongside former AOL chief Steve Case. Savage was in Durham last week, scouting for future investments and sharing entrepreneurship tips at a fireside chat-style panel hosted by Bull City Venture Partners’ Jason Caplain at American Underground. “The volume of deals may be getting smaller but good deals are getting financed,” Savage said. The standards for the industry have just gotten higher, he said. And while that “might be a little painful for entrepreneurs,” it’s also healthy, he said. “I really think that times when the markets are tougher are when some of the very best companies get created," he said. At Revolution, the pandemic meant more in-depth due diligence.

Magic Leap 2 Is Designed For Surgeons, Not Gamers
The view from behind the lenses of a Magic Leap 2 is deceptive. What’s seen in this augmented reality headset floats in the middle distance, clear as a computer screen, but is not actually there. Looking around a room during a recent demonstration of the device, the digital overlay stands still, a glowing hologram of information that, despite appearances, is mere millimeters from the eye. The urge to reach out and try to grab it is almost impossible to resist. Augmented reality offers a different way of interacting with the digital world, putting three-dimensional information or images or entire universes in front of the eyes while keeping the real world as a grounding base layer. The hype and bust of the Magic Leap 1 led the company to rethink its strategy. Enterprise users are the primary focus of Magic Leap 2, from surgeons referencing an MRI in their peripheral vision to fire chiefs plotting out lines of attack on an active wildfire.
