4 Companies Win $100K Investments From Miami-Dade Innovation Authority To Tackle Sargassum Season
Have you got your feet tangled in some sargassum seaweed recently? If not, it’s only a matter of time. But sargassum is not just vexing for beachgoers. Rather, it can also cause respiratory problems and release toxic gasses. In July, it was reported that the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority launched a public challenge, in partnership with the Office of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the Nature Conservancy, to find creative ways to use South Florida’s sargassum surplus. Now, the MDIA has announced four winners, who will each receive a $100,000 equity investment and the opportunity to test and validate their solution in collaboration with Miami-Dade County during this year’s high season for the seaweed. And two of them are based in the Miami area.

Break Through Tech At FIU Places 25 Interns At American Express
Barbarella Castillo had plans to pursue medical school but, she put those on hold. After re-evaluating her options, she decided to pursue her interest in computing and enrolled in the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences at FIU’s College of Engineering and Computing. “It was an excellent decision,” says Castillo, who in 2023 graduated from FIU with a second bachelor’s degree and a full-time job waiting for her at American Express. She landed the position with the help of a unique three-week internship facilitated by Break Through Tech Miami.
American Express Vice President of Technology Donna Peters, who hosted some of the interns, says partnering with programs like Break Through Tech, which is designed to increase female employment in technology, helps support American Express’s goal of embracing diversity to fuel creativity and innovation.

Amazon Cloud Unit Speeds Up Revenue Growth As Clients Adopt AI Services
Amazon said that its cloud division grew revenue 13% year over year in the fourth quarter, exactly in line with analysts’ projections. The company pointed to growing traction in cloud services for artificial intelligence. Many large technology companies have worked quickly to release new products or update existing ones to capitalize on corporate interest in replicating generative AI capabilities after startup OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT chatbot in late 2023. Amazon Web Services, for its part, introduced the Q chatbot for developers and nontechnical corporate workers, along with the Trainium2 chip for training AI models, in the fourth quarter. AWS posted $24.20 billion in revenue in the quarter. “We expect the acceleration to continue in 2024,” said Brian Olsavsky, Amazon’s finance chief.
