Young Miami Tech Firms Draw Record Venture Investments In 2022 Amid Global Upheaval
The tech sector throughout the United States and globally dealt with major upheaval in 2022. The market for initial public stock offerings went cold, stock prices of public companies and valuations of private companies plunged, and venture capital investment for startups nationwide dropped sharply. Despite that shellacking, Miami held its own, showing a resilience that belies short-lived fads. In this city known for hype cycles, evidence is mounting that growth in the tech scene is enduring. That’s in contrast to better known and larger U.S. tech hubs, such as the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Boston and Austin.

Miami Startup Enables Employers To Stay 'Ontop' Of International Hiring
In a post-pandemic context, the future of remote work is increasingly borderless. This is advantageous for American firms, who can pick and choose from the global talent pool. For international workers, this provides an unprecedented opportunity to gain many of the benefits of US employment without having to live stateside. Apart from these benefits, there is one major risk to hiring remote international workers: compliance. Misclassifying workers can lead to hefty penalties from local and international governments. And undertaking an insufficient amount of due diligence can make companies vulnerable to fraudsters. That’s where Bogotá-turned-Miami startup Ontop steps in. The YC-backed startup helps companies hire and pay remote workers from 96 countries – all while ensuring compliance from start to finish.

Meet This Year's Most Intriguing CES Attendees: Robots
Some robots are highly trained productivity machines, helping grocers fulfill online orders or farmers separate crops from weeds. Others shake a feather for your bored cat. We found both types at this year's CES, the world's largest consumer electronics show. And while many consumer robots are more flash than substance (does anyone really want a robot in charge of their child's playtime?), there's something charming about their often clumsy attempts to make our lives a little easier - even if some of these bots never make it to market. Whatever makes CES robots such a delight, here are some of the most intriguing from this year's show.

Female Founders Are Energizing Investment In Women's Healthcare
Despite women making up more than 50% of the population and sex-based differences influencing all tissues, organs, and bodily functions, little attention has been made to the prevention, diagnoses, and treatment of women's unique health needs, according to McKinsey. About 1% of healthcare research and innovation is invested in female-specific conditions beyond oncology. While venture capital for female founders addressing healthcare needs has increased, it's a drop in the overall healthcare bucket. Even small increases in investment would deliver high return on investment (ROI) and better health outcomes for women, writes Chloe E. Bird a sociologist who studies health equity for RAND Corporation. Female founders are showing the potential for significant ROI for investors including—Maven Clinic— which achieved unicorn status. More is needed.

Assistive Tech Gains With Stair-Climbing Wheelchairs, Closed-Caption Glasses
The smartphone revolution of the past decade, which reduced the cost of super-efficient processors and tiny cameras, is now enabling innovators to create subtler, more effective tools to assist people with disabilities. Accessibility is among the consumer trends in focus at CES, a global technology bazaar where companies offer clues about what’s coming in the year ahead and beyond. As parts for electronics have gotten cheaper, smaller and more powerful, startups that build assistive devices have been able to streamline and add features to their products. The new tools and devices have shed bulk—and stigma. L’Oréal announced plans to release late this year Hapta, a computerized makeup device with motion controls, to help people with limited arm mobility apply lipstick. Samsung Electronics is adding a mode to new TVs which can outline shapes and content for visually impaired viewers.
