Miami Makes Debut As A Major Finance Hub In Key Ranking
Miami’s pandemic-driven rise as a major tech and finance hub just got another boost after the Magic City made its debut in a key ranking of the world’s top financial centers. Miami came in at No. 24 worldwide and No. 7 nationally in the 34th edition of the Global Financial Centres Index. The index, compiled every March and September by London-based think tank Z/Yen and the China Development Institute, is followed by policymakers and key investors. The report considers several factors, like human capital, infrastructure, regulations and other criteria from financial institutions such as the World Bank, the Economist Intelligence Unit, the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). “Miami has entered the index because its reputation as an international [center] has developed and grown,” said Mike Wardle, a co-author of the report and chief executive officer of Z/Yen.

How Girls Who Code Is Helping Its Alumni Prepare For The Workforce
Girls Who Code has worked with more than 500,000 students in the decade since its inception in 2012, ensuring that women and nonbinary people recognize that their contributions to the tech sector are vital. Now, the organization is introducing new programs to meet the needs of students entering the workforce. Girls Who Code alumni earn computer science degrees at seven times the national average. Yet navigating the job-interview process has proved challenging. In response, the organization launched a Technical Interview Prep program and a Leadership Academy last year, with plans to run both programs on a school-year cycle. As it equips former students with career-building tools, Girls Who Code is also engaging current students with an effort meant to ensure that they see themselves reflected in the technology they use—particularly video games.

How AI And Brian Science Are Helping Perfumiers Create Fragrances
Making perfume is an art that can be traced back to ancient Greece but now modern-day perfumiers are beginning to look beyond their noses to develop the scents most likely to appeal to us. They are, instead, turning to AI. Perfumes can now be designed to trigger emotional responses using ingredients known as neuroscents – odours shown by biometric measures to arouse different positive feelings such as calm, euphoria or sleepiness. Many beauty brands have invested in neuroscent research and technology, as the possibilities of creating fragrances proven to make consumers feel good are obviously big. L’Oréal has partnered with neurotechnology company Emotiv to create a scent choice “experience”. While mass-market scents can only make so much use of this technology – any scent for sale across five continents has to appeal to a broad audience – niche perfumiers are creating ultra-personal formulas.

New-To-Miami Startup FortyGuard Explores Climate Conscious Solutions
Have you felt a bit hotter than normal lately? It’s not you – it’s the planet, which is warming at a record pace. 2022 was the sixth-warmest year on record based on NOAA’s temperature data. The 10 warmest years in the historical record have all occurred since 2010. Cities are warming even faster than the global average. The average temperature in urban areas is 1.5° to 2° Celsius (2.7° to 3.6° Fahrenheit) warmer than in rural areas. This is because cities have more concrete and asphalt, which trap heat, and fewer trees, which help to cool the air. Jay Sadiq has experienced these problems first-hand. He landed in Miami last month from Dubai, perhaps two of the major global cities that will feel the heat most acutely. But Sadiq is no environmentalist, no scientist, no policymaker. Rather, he’s an entrepreneur keen on solving problems. And what bigger problem to solve than global warming itself? Sadiq’s new-to-Miami business is called FortyGuard. The team started at the bottom, quite literally, by developing a more climate-conscious form of asphalt.

Gallaudet University Debuts A 5G-Connected AR Helmet To Call Plays
A first-of-its-kind football helmet will allow coaches at Gallaudet University, the school for deaf and hard of hearing students in Washington, D.C., to transmit plays to their quarterback via an augmented reality screen. Players on Gallaudet's football team, which competes in NCAA's Division III, have long faced challenges against teams with hearing athletes, such as an inability to hear referees' whistles that signal the end of a play. The helmet, which was developed in conjunction with communications giant AT&T, aims to address another of those long-standing problems: Coaches calling plays to the players. With the new helmet, a Gallaudet coach will use a tablet to select a play that is then transmitted via cell service to a small lens built into the player's helmet. A deaf football team at Gallaudet pioneered perhaps the most iconic sports communication innovation — the huddle. In an 1894 game against another deaf team, Gallaudet's quarterback didn't want to risk his opponent looking in on his American Sign Language conversations with his teammates, so he gathered them around in the tight circle now commonplace in many team sports.
