Techstars Miami Launches With Second Batch Of Tech Startups
Techstars has just launched the second cohort of its local accelerator program, Techstars Miami Powered by J.P. Morgan. The hybrid program will conclude with a demo day on May 11th, where the companies will showcase their progress and pitch to a room full of investors, partners, and industry experts. From upwards of 2,000 applications, Techstars interviewed over 100 startups to ultimately choose the 12 startups that will participate in the program. The startups [pictured above] are active in a diverse range of sectors: from developer tools to supply chain to FinTech to healthcare. “We select founders that have a deep understanding of their customer’s pain points, and have demonstrated an ability to execute quickly. Those are the two main criteria,” Andres Barreto, Managing Director of Techstars Miami, told Refresh Miami. “And of course, we like to see large or growing markets.”

JPMorgan Chase Deploys $2M To Make Miami Tech More Equitable
JPMorgan Chase deployed $2 million in funding to four South Florida organizations that aim to make the region's technology sector more equitable. Coding bootcamp BrainStation, tech education platform CodePath, YWCA of South Florida and Rebrand Cities, an initiative that provides tools, workshops and training for businesses, each received $500,000. The goal is to expand tech workforce training for underserved job seekers and small businesses in Miami. Last year the bank announced it would deploy $10 million toward Tech Equity Miami, a $100 million initiative to close the racial wealth gap in South Florida through tech education. That involves connecting women and people of color with job training and career opportunities. According to Tech Equity Miami, all projects will contribute information and statistics to a public database to measure the impact of the initiative. Although more tech companies have expanded in South Florida in recent years, diverse talent report it's difficult for them to access job opportunities, according to a 2021 analysis from Aire Ventures. Women and Black ecosystem leaders also told the organization they did not feel adequately supported by tech organizations and investors in the region.

Ken Griffin's Miami Move Inspires Investors Who Want To Work From Beach
Finance professionals all over the world would like to follow Ken Griffin to Miami. Florida — where Griffin relocated his Citadel hedge fund — tops the investor wish list when asked where they would move if they could work from anywhere globally. The sunny southern locale with low taxes, and specifically Miami, is also coming up as a rival to Singapore and New York for the title of the hottest residential market this year, according to the latest MLIV Pulse survey. The finance community quickly decamped to friendly climates during the pandemic, with Citadel setting up shop in a luxury Four Seasons hotel in Palm Beach, helping create what’s now known as Wall Street South. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Apollo Global Management Inc. and Blackstone Inc. have also added presence in the region, and billionaire Stephen Ross's Related Cos. is looking to expand in Florida as people relocate for jobs. Waterfront properties in the Sunshine State are hitting records.

What Will The Future Of Cars Be Like? Video Games May Have The Answer
When he’s not designing the digital future of car dashboards, Mike Hichme is probably in his home-built racing simulator. Hichme has had a three-decade career at General Motors and now oversees the entire “digital cockpit” experience, including software development for in-car displays and the ways drivers and passengers interact with touch screens. He’s been an obsessive gamer even longer, growing up in the era of arcade machines and the Atari 2600 before graduating to modern racing sims like iRacing and Assetto Corsa. Those two things, Hichme said, have a lot more in common than you might think.

Here Are The Tech Industry's 2023 Super Bowl Commercials
At Super Bowl LVII, the Kansas City Chiefs referees emerged victorious over the Philadelphia Eagles. But maybe the real winner was us, the viewers, who did not have to sit through a bunch of crypto ads this year. (Also, Rihanna. She won.) These ads offer an insight into the way that the companies we write about everyday market themselves to the average consumer — and sometimes they can be intensely prescient time capsules. This year, with crypto ads (mostly) out of the way, we got back to the basics with advertisements from tech companies that actually sell real things.
