DermaSensor Gains FDA Clearance For Its AI-Powered Skin Cancer Detection Device
It’s the first medical device aimed at improving skin cancer detection in primary care offices for the most common skin cancers. It’s been a long journey, but the road to the US market is now full speed ahead for Miami-based healthcare technology company DermaSensor. Last week, the startup announced it has received FDA clearance for its real-time, non-invasive skin cancer evaluation system. This means that DermaSensor’s AI-powered, handheld medical device can now be used by the country’s 300,000 primary care physicians to detect and evaluate all three common skin cancers for their patients right in their offices. “This is a long-standing unmet clinical need. This is something very well recognized from a population health standpoint. Primary care providers that are assessing suspicious lesions can really provide a lot of benefit to all healthcare stakeholders – patients, clinicians, payers, etc.” said Cody Simmons, DermaSensor’s CEO and co-founder, in an interview with Refresh Miami.

OpenAI’s Altman Discussed Chip-Making Venture With Members Of Congress
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has had discussions with members of Congress about increasing the world’s supply of advanced computer chips necessary to train and run artificial intelligence programs as he seeks to launch a hugely expensive venture to build new chip factories. Altman has discussed where and how to build new semiconductor factories, known in the industry as “fabs,” with members of Congress, according to people familiar with the discussion, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. Advanced semiconductor chips are essential to train and run the AI programs that enable generative AI products like ChatGPT. Altman and other tech leaders insist that AI will fundamentally change the world economy, and having a cheap supply of computer chips is crucial to maintaining U.S. competitiveness economically and militarily. The United States plans to spend billions of dollars to increase domestic chip production, while at the same time blocking the export of advanced AI chips to China with the goal of keeping its military from having access to cutting-edge AI.

Can AI Solve Legacy Tech Problems? Companies Are Putting It to the Test
Many companies still rely on Cobol, a boomer-aged programming language whose practitioners are retiring. So CIOs are gingerly trying out generative AI tools to freshen their IT. Generative AI is starting to help business technology leaders with the long overdue task of modernizing their information-technology systems, some of them laden with code from a programming language that predates the Beatles. “A big problem that we have in our space, and legacy companies have, is we have Cobol running around,” said Amin Venjara, chief data officer of 75-year-old payroll-processing company ADP. The number of developers conversant in Cobol is dwindling, he added. “Finding the Cobol engineers—how many people know that?” The Roseland, N.J.-based company is exploring the use of generative AI to “translate” its mainframe code from Cobol—a language first designed in the 1950s and still commonly used at banks and financial services firms—into Java, a relative newcomer among programming languages that dates to 1995.
