Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Announces GPT-4 Turbo, Its Most Powerful AI Yet
OpenAI announced its new, more powerful GPT-4 Turbo artificial intelligence model Monday during its first in-person event, and revealed a new option that will let users create custom versions of its viral ChatGPT chatbot. It’s also cutting prices on the fees that companies and developers pay to run its software. OpenAI’s announcements show that one of the hottest companies in tech is rapidly evolving its offerings in an effort to stay ahead of rivals like Anthropic, Google and Meta in the AI arms race. "ChatGPT, which broke records as the fastest-growing consumer app in history months after its launch, now has about 100 million weekly active users," OpenAI said. "More than 92% of Fortune 500 companies use the platform, up from 80% in August, and they span across industries like financial services, legal applications and education."

Silicon Valley’s Big, Bold Sci-Fi Bet on the Device After the Smartphone
It was just weeks before the start-up’s gadget, the Ai Pin, would be revealed to the world — a culmination of five years, $240 million in funding, 25 patents, a steady drumbeat of hype and partnerships with a list of top tech companies, including OpenAI, Microsoft and Salesforce. Their mission? No less than liberating the world from its smartphone addiction. The solution? More technology. Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, Humane’s husband-and-wife founders, envision a future with less dependency on the screens that their former employer, Apple, made ubiquitous. Artificial intelligence “can create an experience that allows the computer to essentially take a back seat,” Mr. Chaudhri said.

These South Florida Startups Have Raised The Most Funding In 2023
South Florida startups continued to rake in multimillion-dollar funding rounds in 2023, despite a tough year for the technology industry. However, fundings have declined significantly from pandemic-era highs. Startups headquartered in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties attracted about $1.2 billion from investors during the first three quarters of the year, according to data from the Pitchbook-NVCA Venture Monitor. Locally, the collapse of FTX and other cryptocurrency ventures were another factor since Miami was previously a hotspot for the industry. While there were fewer funding deals, several companies secured large capital injections of $20 million or more. Here are the top raises of the year so far.

Using Language To Give Robots A Better Grasp Of An Open-Ended World
By blending 2D images with foundation models to build 3D feature fields, a new MIT method helps robots understand and manipulate nearby objects with open-ended language prompts. Inspired by humans' ability to handle unfamiliar objects, a group from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) designed Feature Fields for Robotic Manipulation (F3RM), a system that blends 2D images with foundation model features into 3D scenes to help robots identify and grasp nearby items. F3RM can interpret open-ended language prompts from humans, making the method helpful in real-world environments that contain thousands of objects, like warehouses and households.
