AI Hype Sparks Excitement And Fear As Government Pushes For Greater Guardrails

U.S. President Joe Biden has issued an executive order (EO) that seeks to establish “new standards” for AI safety and security, including requirements for companies developing foundation AI models to notify federal government and share results of all safety tests before they’re deployed to the public. The fast-moving generative AI movement, driven by the likes of ChatGPT and foundation AI models developed by OpenAI, has sparked a global debate around the need for guardrails to counter the potential pitfalls of giving over too much control to algorithms.

Miami-based JourneyTrack Raises $1.5M In Seed Funding From Elevate Capital, DeepWork

Ania Rodriguez and her team have built a SaaS experience management platform that prioritizes the customer experience. It’s called JourneyTrack and it grew out of this founder’s own journey as a longtime user experience consultant for Fortune 1000 companies. While running Key Lime Interactive, which she founded in 2009 and continues to chair today, Rodriguez saw over the years how enterprises struggled to deliver a seamless customer journey with the available tools on the market. In 2021 she founded JourneyTrack, a cloud-based collaboration suite that puts the customer at the center of the experience.

As Ozempic And Wegovy Take Off, This Tech Startup Raised $20M To Tackle Weight Loss With Data

Weight loss has always been big business, but it’s exploded of late due to surging demand for Ozempic, Wegovy and other new diabetes and obesity drugs.  But as consumers and businesses pour more money and resources into tackling the obesity epidemic, which costs the U.S. more than $170 billion a year, drug developers aren’t alone in coming up with innovative solutions. Signos, a five-year-old startup, is taking an approach that doesn’t involve pills. The company is using off-the-shelf continuous glucose monitors, or CGMs, and providing real-time diet and exercise recommendations based on an individual’s readings.

Billionaire Peter Thiel's Founders Fund Behind $22M Funding For Miami Startup

Traba, an online marketplace that connects light industrial workers with businesses that need to fill shifts, raised $22 million to expand into new markets and add more features to its platform. The funding was led by Founders Fund, the venture capital firm led by billionaire Peter Thiel and OpenStore founder Keith Rabois. Menlo Park, California's Khosla Ventures contributed to the round. Founded in 2021, Miami and New York-based Traba reports it serves "tens of thousands" of workers and hundreds of businesses that operate warehouses, distribution centers, food processing facilities and other light industrial spaces. The startup is now backed by nearly $44 million in investor capital. In April, it signed a lease to occupy a 2,744 square foot office space at the SunTrust International Center in downtown Miami.

Europe’s 10 Fastest-Growing Digital Health Startup Teams

It’s been a sobering year for digital health startups in Europe. The sector has picked up just $1.4bn in funding in 2023 so far — it raised $3.2bn across the whole of 2022 — and fallen further than European tech as a whole. A number of digital health startups are still flying in the face of tough macroeconomic headwinds. Workplace health insurance and elderly care startups feature prominently on the list, alongside a smattering of others covering personalized nutrition, skincare and practice software. Headcount data for the past year has been pulled from Dealroom. All the companies featured were founded after 2005 and — to avoid the results being skewed by small businesses making a flurry of hires — startups needed to have raised $50m or more to make the cut.
