Vice President Kamala Harris Delivers An Optimistic Climate Message In Miami
Vice President Kamala Harris said she’s not only optimistic about solving climate change, she’s excited about it. “We all understand we have to be solutions driven. The solutions are at hand,” Harris said on the stage of the second annual Aspen Ideas: Climate conference in Miami Beach, where she was interviewed by Latin music star Gloria Estefan about the Biden administration’s recent investments into climate action. Estefan, the Cuban-American former front woman of Miami Sound Machine, said she’s relieved to see the administration tackling an issue that worries her deeply. “After living in Miami Beach for 38 years, we see the changes,” she said. “Our bay, our coral is dying. We have major fish kills. Living on the bay, I’ve seen the water rising to an alarming degree.” Harris highlighted recent investments from the Biden administration that tackle climate change in multiple ways, from the expansion of electric, emissions-free school buses across America to rebates and tax breaks on green technology like electric cars, efficient heat pumps and rooftop solar.

At Global Aspen Ideas Conference, Tech Touted As Solution To Our Climate Woes
If you live in Miami, it’s easy to see the effects of our changing climate: sunny day flooding, record-breaking heat waves, and increasingly extreme storm surges. But at this year’s Aspen Ideas: Climate conference in Miami Beach, global leaders showcased Miami as an example not only of a major city that is vulnerable to climate change – but also one that is doing something (although perhaps not enough) about it. The conferences’ organizers touted the three-day affair this week as a solutions-oriented event. Thanks to this focus, technology and innovation were center stage and a major topic of conversation amongst the 2,500 participants. This is even more than last year’s event, which already showcased a fair amount of tech solutions.

Is A Real Estate Property Too Good To Be True? VisionX Can Give You The Lowdown
When Alexis Leonard was moving back to her hometown of Miami after studying at Florida State University, she was on a mission to find the perfect place to live. Growing up with a grandmother who was a real estate agent, Leonard was ready to comb all the MLS listings necessary to find her new home. Fellow FSU student Sixtus Kuudar had a similar experience. Kuudar wanted to secure an apartment before leaving his native Ghana. He found a place online, paid his rent in advance. But when he showed up at the address, it turned out to be nothing more than farmland. Leonard and Kuudar teamed up to co-found Miami startup VisionX to tackle these exact sorts of problems. The idea is that VisionX leverages AI to determine whether photos of properties have been edited. If they have, the platform provides a warning to their users.

A New Miami Resident, Julian Jung, Is At The Center Of Venture Capital Boom
Once the capital of pastel shirts, white shoes and retirees, Miami’s drive to become the next hub of finance is attracting record investments and a growing population of venture capitalists like 2013 Northeastern graduate Julian Jung. Jung, who moved to Miami six months ago after two years in Mexico, is currently a partner at Republic and co-founded its institutional division, Republic Capital, which manages over $800 million and has invested in more than 150 portfolio companies globally. He works with accredited investors, family offices and institutional investors at Republic, providing them with access to private venture opportunities and fund-related products. Republic’s core business is building a platform that allows for non-accredited investors to invest in private venture opportunities, Jung says. The company also has multiple business lines, including an institutional division, an accredited investor only division, a crypto division, a broker dealer and a merchant bank.
