The Tech Boom In Florida: How Private Citizens And The Government Are Fostering Growth
When asked what comes to mind when thinking about Miami and Florida in general, most people will conjure up images of pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, warm weather, and unparalleled entertainment. However, ask the same question to entrepreneurs and tech experts and you probably get a different answer: a thriving tech hub. Over the past years, Miami and the wider state of Florida have emerged as one of the hottest new tech hubs in the United States, particularly for startups. With a robust entrepreneurship ecosystem, a diverse talent pool, numerous tax incentives, and some of the world’s biggest tech events, the region is attracting entrepreneurs from all over the world.

BOOM! Miami Metro Hauls In $5.5B In VC In 2022, A New Record
Founders and funders continued to flock to the Miami area in 2022, growing the ecosystem – and helping put Miami on the map for venture capital. While other large metros and top tech hubs lost a lot of ground, Miami gained. Now solidly in the top 10 US metros for venture capital, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area logged $5.5 billion in in 2022 across 423 deals, according to the Q4 2022 PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor. This is a new record at a time when larger tech hubs are seeing to 25% to 40% decreases. We also saw 11.6% more deals than last year, whereas New York for instance saw a 15% drop in deals. The report was jointly produced by PitchBook and the National Venture Capital Association. For 2022, the Miami metro ranks 8th in the nation, behind the Bay Area, New York, LA, Boston, Chicago, Seattle and Philadelphia, and ahead of Austin and Washington DC, according to the Venture Monitor’s graphic.

Tech salaries in Miami went up in 2022
Tech salaries in Miami increased at a higher percentage than those in Silicon Valley last year. But it's not the best-paid city in the Sunshine State. South Florida tech salaries reached an average of $104,542 in 2022, according to the 2023 Dice Tech Salary Report. That's up 10.6% from the year before, more than the 5.1% rise reported in Silicon Valley, a region that includes San Francisco.

Is Miami’s Tech Scene The New Silicon Valley? A Northeastern Grad Thinks So
The tech scene in South Florida reminds Northeastern graduate and Miami resident Daniel Trostli of boom times in Silicon Valley. “It feels to me like San Francisco did in 2013, when everything was possible,” says Trostli, who graduated from Northeastern with a degree in mechanical engineering in 2012 and moved to Miami in 2020. “You can pretty much get a meeting to talk to anybody you need to,” he says. “People just want to help, and it doesn’t seem to be in a transactional way.” For Trostli, Miami has been the perfect location to expand his “passion project,” an audio sample sharing platform called Sample Focus that currently has more than 1 million registered users.
Trostli, who staffed an entrepreneurs booth at the Feb. 21 grand opening of Northeastern’s new Miami campus, says he’s met “smart, ambitious tech founders” at programs such as On Deck, which holds weekend summits to help founders build an online community and find investors.

Miami's Pull As A Corporate Relocation Magnet Is Only Getting Stronger
Most of the corporate headlines in 2023 so far have focused on layoffs and cost-cutting, but just like in 2022, the news in Miami is playing a different tune. Global banking giant Rothschild & Co. signed a lease for its first Miami office, Silicon Valley tech firm LeverX moved its global headquarters to the Magic City, and local IT company Kaseya announced a 3,400-job expansion. The moves build on a year in which Miami emerged as the hottest office market in the country, with a record 4.3M SF of leasing activity, according to Blanca Commercial Real Estate data. Much of the city's momentum in recent years came from tech companies, but even as that sector of the economy saw the most contraction, Miami continued to expand. “Our fear was that it was going to be sort of one of a handful of companies that are moving or opening offices this year. And it really gained incredible momentum,” said Andrew Trench, executive director of Cushman & Wakefield’s Miami office agency leasing team. “It went from we were afraid it was going to be a flash in the pan to more of a snowball effect, where, as more and more influential groups are moving here, others were intrigued by that, and it really gained steam.”
