The Herd Of Female-Founded Unicorn Companies Continues To Grow In 2022
Last year was a blockbuster for private companies newly valued at $1 billion or above, and unicorn startups founded by women weren’t left out of the growth. According to Crunchbase data, a total of 595 companies joined The Crunchbase Unicorn Board last year, far exceeding the numbers in prior years. Of these, 83 were founded or co-founded by women, more than quadrupling that category’s count from 2020, when there were 18 new unicorn companies with at least one woman as a founder. That pace seems to be keeping up into 2022. So far this year, 10 of the 100 or so new unicorns that have been minted have at least one female co-founder. Of these, Florida-based payments company Stax, Boston-based global employment platform Globalization Partners, and Singapore-based customer engagement service Insider are led by female founder CEOs.

Miami-Dade's Ana Chammas Spearheads Web3 GovTech Innovation
One under-discussed aspect of the Miami tech movement is the local public sector’s work powering the digital systems that keep our city and county moving on a daily basis. While Mayor Suarez’s “How can I help” approach garnered his government international notoriety, there are groups of civil servants behind the scenes working to make Miami a hub for government innovation. Ana Chammas is one of such people. For the better part of two decades, she has spearheaded innovation efforts for Miami-Dade County. “We were building something that didn’t exist: government on the web,” Chammas told Refresh Miami. The goal? Create a digital knowledge base enabling citizen services through all channels.

Meet Five Air Taxi Companies With Plans For South Florida
South Florida – and its infamous traffic congestion – continue to be a beacon for the emerging air taxi industry. This week Eve Air Mobility announced it hopes to bring its all-electric air taxis to Miami Dade County. The Melbourne, Florida-based company, a subsidiary of Brazilian aerospace firm Embraer, builds electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft vehicles, better known as eVTOLs. The vehicles can take off vertically like a helicopter and then fly like a regular plane. Eve is working with partners like charter airline GlobalX to bring its vehicles to the skies as air taxis, starting with a route between Miami International Airport and the Miami Beach Convention Center. Eve is far from the only air taxi concept to set its sights on South Florida. Here's a look at four other companies making moves to bring flying taxis to the region.

Mark Zuckerberg said that Meta would add NFTs to Instagram, according to Engadget and The Daily Beast. In January, we heard a report that teams at Facebook and Instagram were working on NFT integrations. The report mentioned that there was progress on features to let you use an NFT as a profile and mint NFTs on the platform and discussions around creating a marketplace. Amazon Is Latest Big Tech Firm To Plant A Flag In Miami Office Market
Amazon is establishing a new foothold in Miami, the latest sign that the city is succeeding in its efforts to become an expanding East Coast tech hub. The e-commerce giant is renting nearly 9,000 square feet of office space at a WeWork Inc. building in Coral Gables, a city in Miami-Dade County, according to a person familiar with the matter. The space is occupied by employees in the Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Web Services teams, this person said. Some of the employees are transferring to Miami from Latin America. Amazon is in the process of hiring more than 60 additional employees to bring its total in Miami to about 160 jobs, this person said. This office represents the company’s biggest corporate commitment in South Florida. While the Seattle-based company’s presence in Miami is still modest in scale by Amazon’s standards, the firm becomes the latest in a string of tech and financial companies that have relocated to the Miami area or opened new satellite offices. They have been drawn by lower taxes, sunny weather, and a more business-friendly environment than most states.
