South Florida Startups Raised More Than $200M In April
South Florida was stacked with strong funding deals in April after raising more than $1 billion in the first quarter of 2022. Businesses in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Bech counties attracted more than $220 million in capital last month, according to South Florida Business Journal reports and regulatory filings. That's a sizable number for a single month by most midsize regional standards. That's about one-fifth of the funding the region raised in all of the first quarter, with $1.2 billon secured across 84 deals. That followed a record-setting 2021, when Miami-area ventures raised more than $4 billion from venture capital investors.

FIFA Blockchain Deal Is First New US World Cup Sponsor Since 2011
FIFA got a first new American sponsor of the men’s World Cup in 11 years on Monday, signing a deal for this year’s tournament in Qatar with blockchain technology provider Algorand. The deal is also a “technical partnership” to help FIFA develop a digital assets strategy, soccer’s world body said. It could help FIFA market soccer-related non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Algorand is the first new U.S.-based sponsor for FIFA’s marquee World Cup since 2011. Algorand founder Silvio Micali said in a FIFA statement his company could help “transform the way we all experience the world’s game.”

META4 Makes The Case For NFTs As An Asset Class And Institutional Investors Are Already In

Saif Ishoof On Being Miami's 'Connector-In-Chief'
Saif Ishoof says people often have questions about the rocketship lapel pin he frequently wears. The pin is about more than making a fashion statement, said Ishoof, founder of Miami-based Lab22c, an organization that helps businesses find talent and scale. Instead, it’s a reminder of his goals as one of the most prominent local voices in South Florida’s up-and-coming technology sector. “We want to build rocketships of opportunity big enough to ensure everyone can get to the moon,” he said. “And we can do it together.” That involves ensuring homegrown founders, companies and locals aren’t left behind, said Ishoof, formerly VP of engagement for Florida International University.

Why This Climate Scientist Now Works For a Car Company
Early in his career as a climate scientist, Spencer Reeder traveled to Antarctica to study the impacts of climate change firsthand. He later worked on climate policy for the state of Washington, served as a lead author on the U.S. National Climate Assessment, and worked for Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen helping fund more climate research. Today, he works for a car company. He had worked to try to pass a cap-and-trade law in the state of Washington, but the bill failed, leading him to feel frustrated with the political process—and to think more about the potential of working in industry. By 2016, as transportation surpassed electricity as the biggest source of emissions in the U.S., “transportation was sort of in the crosshairs for everybody in the climate community,” he says.
