Meet The Bedtime App That Secured $650K+ During Miami Tech Month
Sometimes, a founder is in the right place at the right time. That was the case for Storybook co-founder and CEO Francisco Cornejo, who secured $150,000 in cash grants and $500,000 in commitments from investors during last week's eMerge Americas conference in Miami Beach. But it wasn't a straight path to success for Storybook, a mobile app that combines relaxation techniques, infant massage, music and bedtime stories to help parents and their children bond and sleep better. Cornejo and his wife and co-founder, Daniela Vega, were actually due to attend the 2020 eMerge conference after winning a pitch event in their home country, Ecuador. In the end, they decided to come to Miami anyway.

Ariana The Techie Raises $3.3M Seed Round For Fine Art Marketplace
Ariana Waller, who is better known by her nom de plume, Ariana The Techie, has developed Mueshi as a platform for users to buy, sell, and fractionally invest in NFTs. This marketplace will be open for users on the Etherium and Solana blockchains in June. While New York may have been the original source of inspiration for Mueshi, Miami has been the launchpad for the startup’s success thus far. At the React Miami conference last week, Ariana announced that Mueshi has raised a $3.3M seed round led by Harlem Capital. Alongside the launch of Mueshi’s platform in June, the startup plans to put on Miami’s first-ever fine art NFT exhibition. The 30-day event in Wynwood will showcase work from local emerging artist Mark “ALT” Delmont, who recently displayed his work at Soho House and has worked with brands including Scotch & Soda and Trader Joe’s. Ariana hopes that her success can be a source of inspiration for others. This starts with her name, Ariana The Techie, which she said “came from wanting to inspire more women to be software engineers in the blockchain space.”

SoFlo Company Hopes To Provide Accessible Eye Care For Everyone
When you go to a doctor’s office for an eye exam, you normally walk in and prepare for the puff of smoke in your eye and the number of other tests you’ll have to sit down for, but what if they was a way to change that entire process? The simplicity of “Heru”, a named meant to closely mirror a “hero”, is matched by the company’s protagonistic mission. Armed with a Ph.D. in vision science, years of experience as a practicing ophthalmologist, and a goal of achieving worldwide change, Dr. Mohamed Abou Shousha, the founder and CEO of Heru, is determined to “democritize eye care” as he puts it. This starts by acknowledging the obstacles many people face in getting eye care including a question he and other experts have asked many patients over the years, “what’s your biggest fear?” What started as an idea about 10 years ago, eventually spun off of the University of Miami’s renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Heru uses AI and VR-powered technology to simplify and accelerate a familiar process.

Chilean Fintech Xepelin Wants LatAm Businesses To Get Paid
Fintech companies and other entities have moved the needle for consumer payments in Latin America, particularly during the global pandemic, prompting consumers to be more comfortable with digital payments. Chile-based Xepelin aims to do the same with business-to-business payments via a SaaS payments infrastructure that includes financial information in real time, embedded financial services and data models, all to be a company’s “digital CFO” of sorts. Now the company is doubling down in both Chile and Mexico, while also eyeing new countries for expansion and will hire additional employees and launch new products. Support for all of this comes from a new $111 million Series B round of funding — all equity this time — led by Avenir and Kaszek. Xepelin is touting the round as “the largest Series B investment round in the history of Chile and one of the largest in Latin America.”
