The Bid To Make Florida's Biggest City A Tech Hub
Urban renewals rarely trace their origins to Twitter, but then Miami is no conventional city. “How can I help?” Francis Suarez, Miami’s mayor, asked on Twitter in 2020, after a tech entrepreneur suggested moving Silicon Valley out of the Bay Area. Mr Suarez has an enthusiastic following as he tries to rebrand Miami from a party paradise into a hub for digital finance and technology. He even sports a t-shirt carrying a “#HowCanIHelp?” tagline. With the highest share of foreign-born residents of any metro area (more than half its people were not born in America), Miami is a vibrant city with a strong Latino influence. Can Miami be the “city of the future” that Mr Suarez touts?

Miami NFT Week Founders Want Locals To Get Involved In City's Tech Boom
Miami is the unofficial NFT capital of the world. This past weekend, thousands flocked to Wynwood to bask in its crypto-glory. The inaugural Miami NFT Week, a three-day conference of talks, panels and events centered around the rising NFT industry at Mana Wynwood Convention Center. For some, an NFT — which stands for “non fungible token,” and authenticates ownership of a digital asset — seems like a trendy way to invest in (or blow a ton of cash on) anything from memes to fine art. For Ted Lucas, a Miami native and founder of Slip-N-Slide records, NFTs mean much more. Lucas co-founded NFT Week along with Erik LaPaglia and Gianni D’Alerta to encourage his fellow Miamians to learn about opportunities in NFT.

Miami Startup Creates 3D-Printing Seawalls To Combat Climate Change
Sea levels are rising, and Miami stands to be one of the first places in America to bear the brunt of this climate change. Miami-Dade County predicts that by 2040, sea levels will be 10 to 17 inches higher than they were in 2000. One Miami-based company has developed a tech-forward solution to turn back the tides of climate change. The Addition Company is working to create a system for 3D printing so-called ‘living’ seawalls, mimicking coral reefs and mangroves. On top of protecting shorelines, the biodiversity inherent to these seawalls leads to an improvement in water quality. Freeman underscored the urgency of addressing rising sea levels. A report from the US Army Corps of Engineers, the government body in charge of seawall projects, noted that Miami will be hardest hit by rising seas, with property damages predicted to cost Miamians upwards of $200 billion within the next 20 years.
